She bought a modest house (“Well,” she said, “it does have two fireplaces”) with a tiny back yard and sweet neighbors. Once the girls began careers on the West Coast - Sarah Margaret in film and Rainey in singing - and Justin settled in Missoula, Montana, Rose made the decision to move west and let her home be a base for them to come to. Her children, Justin, Sarah Margaret and Rainey Qualley, attended Carolina Day School, and Rose and the children were all involved in the community. Her sister, Beverly, lived in Biltmore Forest and the house Rose built while living here was just down the street, close enough for cousins to walk down the street to visit each other. Known to her friends as Rose, the Gaffney, South Carolina native came to Asheville looking for family and connection. She had just returned from a trip to New York to emcee an event and was preparing to travel again to an event sponsored by L’Oreal called Women of Worth, honoring outstanding women who have made a difference. We spent some time recently visiting by phone, reminiscing about her Asheville days and catching up on news of the children and other people we both know. But life has moved on for her, and she is happy now settled in a neighborhood outside Los Angeles, working and cherishing every moment she gets to spend with her children. Once Andie MacDowell left North Carolina, she never stopped missing Asheville and her friends here.
